All new arrivals from Creep, Norse Projects, Penfield, Reigning Champ, Tellason and Yuketen
To borrow a quote from the Timbers Army banner from last weekend'shome opener, Portlanders are game, "rain or shine.", and this time of year tends to be much more of the former. Like any seasoned Northwesterner, we prefer to don a well-made, protective jacket over popping open an umbrella.
This week, we're happy to re-introduce two of our best-selling jackets from last spring - the Elka Jacket by Norse Projects and the Gibson by Penfield. While these two take contrasting material approaches to battle the elements (and fuel the age-old debate of PVC vs. waxed canvas), both are exceptional choices. And both make great layering pieces as we transition from cold and wet to mild and wet.
It's about that time friends. We've started taking delivery of new goods for the approaching Spring season and it all starts with a fresh batch of 14.75 oz Stanton denim for The Woodlands.
Based in Los Angeles, RGT is focused on hand-crafted denim and apparel expertly crafted from Japanese and American Cone Denim. As a special batch release for the shop, we used a hand-oiled natural patch with Tanner Goods that will age and patina just like the jeans themselves. We also stocked up on the trusty AR-G trouserswhich have quickly become a popular non-denim option.

One of the most common questions we hear, without a doubt is, “What’s your favorite season?” Ours is simple, albeit a bit unconventional: layering season. Spanning from late September through April (at least in our neck of the woods,) the weather during these seven months can change with a moment’s notice. And there’s no category of clothing as warm, as comfortable, and as sheddable (to coin a new phrase) as knitwear. It’s a layering secret weapon.
We’ve worked hard to stock some of the best knitwear available, and whether it’s a heavyweight, cozy Classic Cardigan from Dehen or a foot-warming pair of Cypress Socksby Wigwam or Fox River Mills, we’ve got you covered. And if the wind starts kicking up, there’s nothing as nice as a goodscarf to protect ya’ neck (sorry, couldn’t resist that one.) The Woodlands stocks a handful of excellent solid and patterned options from both Chamula and The Hill-side.
And don't forget to snag a Chunky Knit Cap (or two!) at $15-$20 dollars a pop - it's a great deal, and the perfect stocking stuffer.
Stay warm, friends.
It seems the deeper we become entangled in the digital world, the more we appreciate the times we get to write something down for real. Whether it’s jotting a quick note to yourself or penning a catch-up letter to your grandparents, using a pen with some weight that makes a nice stroke makes the experience all the more enjoyable. Two of our favorite options in the shop are the pens from the Midori pure brass collection and Kaweco Sport Fountain pens
Likewise, the way we transport our document hard copies, fresh reading material, sketches and ideas has become a bit of an obsession lately. Using cheap, disposable options from the office supply store got us by when we were younger, but showing up to a meeting with a raggedy, old file folder doesn’t exactly scream professionalism. As such, we [the Tanner Goods side of our company] developed clean and classic Document Folios and Business Card Cases for these occasions.

One of the best parts of working at Tanner Goods is the fact that, even though we have a range of different interests, there are certain passions we all share: every person in our crew values high-quality materials, craftsmanship, and goods with a story to tell. This common mindset extends beyond the workshop, and it’s been a big help for me to be able to share ideas with and get advice from the team as I work on a little personal sewing project.
In search of a cotton fabric that would be thick enough for a light jacket, but light enough to use as a layer (as styled by Hiroki Nakamura of Visvim fame), I found this indigo-dyed, hand-embroidered furoshiki (Japanese carrying cloth) at Cargo here in Portland. It was part of a fabric lot dating around 1930, making it about 80 years old, and the kind ladies at the shop threw in a few extra scraps from the bundle so I could do much-needed period-appropriate repairs as well.

While the cloth probably spent much of its early life doing the fabric equivalent of hard labor, it’s very beautiful, and it’s earned a leisurely retirement. I plan to turn it into a noragi for myself, sewn with the same kind of sashiko needle and thread that assembled it long ago.

I’ll keep you updated on how it turns out – wish me luck!
We stopped by Stumptown yesterday morning to send our friends at Gerber off proper as they embark on a month long journey across the United States to see what kind of trouble they can get in. Tanner Goods and Danner along with a few other regional brands helped outfit them with the best gear to handle any situation on the road.
To follow along with their adventure, check out the Hello, Trouble site. We'll see you guys in New York. Don't do anything we wouldn't do...

The Flat Wool cap is one of our favorite styles from Norse Projects and they always seem to disappear quickly, be sure to snag yours before they're gone for good!

New styles arriving soon for fall 2012 from Yuketen; The Johnson Workboots in brown Chromexcel with Vibram Cristy Sole and the 5 Eye Maine Guide Boots in Red Chromexcel with Vibram Cristy Sole.

As a kid, unwrapping a gift to find a pair of socks or knit cap was nothing to get excited about. But as we've grown older [and just a touch wiser], it's these little pleasures that we've grown to love more and more. As such, we've been chomping at the bit to break out our latest collection of Woodlands Chunky Knit Caps, and couldn't wait any longer. For the third straight season, we've worked with Columbia Knit to produce a few melange variations in black, grape, grey and indigo, as well as some excellent solid color choices. If you're anything like us, the cooler nights are a welcome chance to add a new colorway of knit cap to the arsenal.

Fall 2012 is here and we are proud to announce the addition of the Eastland Made in Maine and Eastland 1955 footwear collections to our shop with two handsome boots: the Wildwood and Sherman 1955.
Each is crafted with the finest quality components and leathers available. We think they are the ideal boots to help get you aquainted with the wet, cold days ahead.

Tools are something we take seriously. Some we carry daily, while others are rotated into service for weekend camp trips in the Cascades or quick beat-the-heat excursions to the coast. Bottom line: tools are essential, and one of those things you really miss right about the time you realize you need one.
The Northwest is chock-full of quality knife and tool companies, and we’ve recently added some of our favorites to the floor at The Woodlands. Leatherman introduced their first multi-tool in 1983, and has been the industry standard ever since. The Skelatool CX is functional in every sense of the word. Built wtih an assortment of pliers, cutters, a bit driver, a knife, and a reliable, 25-year warrenty, the Leatherman multi-tools are the very best around.
Also hailing from right outside of Portland, Ore., Gerber Legendary Blades offers a nice selection of well-designed knives that don’t cost a fortune. Side note: co-founders Mark and Sam actually helped design a few of the ones we carry, and have the sketches to prove it. They recommend the Remix or Ripstop II.
Rounding out our selection are Snow Peak and Sigg, two companies that manufacture some of our favorite camping essentials. These titanium and aluminum vessels occupy a special place in our lives [directly under the bench seat of our van]. Whether packing it in a few miles or doing a little car camping, the titanium tableware has you covered.

A shop favorite, the incredibly precise, and trusty Kaweco Sport Fountain pens are back in-stock. Be sure to snag some extra colors of ink too!

I selected a handful of items from the Woodlands store that I personally use & enjoy, as well as a couple pieces I plan on purchasing. Every product is built with quality, which is the top of my priorities when shopping. I was also pleased to find items that contribute to my All Grape Everything lifestyle.
Penfield Jackson Shirt: I really like the horizontal pattern with dull grays, blue & purple on white. The pattern lines up really well on the collar. It’s a nice all-season weight cotton.
3sixteen for the Woodlands Wool Tie Eggplant: This is often the width of tie I prefer & the color is a great shade of purple. This goes well with the Penfield shirt, as it breaks up the pattern, but maintains the dull purple motif. (NOW ON SALE!!!!)
The Hill-side Selvedge Bandana "Kyoto Violet": There’s a multitude of ways to wear these bandanas & I enjoy wearing mine everyday, often exploring new uses for such an awesome piece of fabric. Also a great washed purple color. If only they made pants…
Two Feet Ahead Crew Sock Cranberry Heather: I have half a dozen pairs & they make the Danner Boots extra comfortable. I like the color of this specific pair, the cranberry goes well with the burgundy beanie. All while not being too red to conflict with the washed purples in this particular fit.
Snow Peak Portable Hashi: These portable hashi (chopsticks) came into the shop recently & became an instant necessity. I use chopsticks 2-3 meals per day, & it’s cool to be able to carry a pair with me always, and a nice pair at that!
Danner Light Lovejoy: I’ve been wearing these boots for about a year now, & they have held up exceptionally well. They’ve been perfect for everyday wear in the workshop & for just about any activity. I’ve worn the Vibram soles down quite a bit & plan on getting them resoled soon, but they’ve made for excellent dancing shoes since wearing down the tread. I rotate these with another pair of Danner Boots [Mountain Lights], as I’ve never owned shoes with such quality as Danner. Plus you can’t go wrong with being made in Portland for 80 years!

Constructed from the same Cone MIlls textiles as their denim, the Coverall jacket fit has been upgraded with additional pockets of all shapes and sizes, ready to take on the wear and tear of daily life. There's no better way to beat the last cold-snap of winter than by seasoning up your cast iron and baking a batch of camp biscuits in your oven. It's a great way to pretend that its summertime and that you are sipping whiskey-coffee in the early morning by an open fire. Make no mistake, there is NO substitute for a cast iron pan. In my opinion that is the only way to make a proper biscuit, think I'm lying? Go ask your grandma, she may just knock the sense into you with her own dutch oven. Or, you can take my word for it.

First things first, and you will thank me for this for the rest of your life, always keep a stick of butter in your freezer. The trick to a good biscuit is making sure your butter gets evenly incorporated into your flour mixture.
Start by preheating your oven to 450° F
The mixture:
Now for the frozen butter (I know the anticipation was killing you). Take a cheese grater and grate 5 Tablespoons of butter into your flour mixture. Don't skimp here, use all 5 tablespoons, more if you like. Spread the frozen butter flakes around and stir until they're all coated in flour.
Next add a scant cup of buttermilk and mix with clean hands. If you forgot what scant means quit now, call your grandma and ask her to overnight you some biscuits. If your mixture seems too sticky add in small doses of flour until it's easier to work. Do not under any circumstances substitute regular milk for the buttermilk, your biscuits will suck and your grandma will no longer be jealous.
Work the dough into half inch thick biscuits, arrange on your iron and throw those puppies into the oven. Bake until golden brown, depending on your oven this could be anywhere between 7-13 minutes. Now, invite your friends over and impress them with your mad biscuit skills. You are sure to be bribed for your amazing biscuit recipe, don't share unless it's a really good offer.

Welcome to Mt. Hood National Forest my friends. This sanctuary of sorts is one of countless examples of why I insist that Portland’s best gift isn’t anything within the city itself, but simply it’s location. You don’t have to travel far to find yourself in another world.

I can think of few better places than a clouded mountain peak to truly lose a sense of your self. Cheers to letting go.

We recently had the pleasure of taking a company field-trip to the Dehen facilities located right in here in Portalnd, Oregon. James Clark, the mastermind behind the revival of Dehen 1920 and resident expert of the brand was on hand to give us a personal tour of the production facility as well as share with us a great story filled with history and tradition.
Aside from the inherent historical and regional significance of the Dehen family, we have become increasingly curious about the production of the garments themselves as we too are involved in small scale manufacturing at Tanner Goods. It was remarkable to see a few of the same original machines Dehen has employed in their knit production for well over 50 years. The antique machines create a unique and highly sought after four-end jersey knit which is really quite striking to behold. Each sweater takes approximately three pounds of yarn to produce and features an extensively robust handle and finish. Also, the operation of the knitting machines themselves is somewhat archaic and It's safe to say there aren't many experts remaining that are capable of even running these machines efficiently. The four-end knit is unique to the Dehen brand and there isn't anyone else in North America with the capacity or know-how to produce knitted garments with the same quality or method and while it may be slower and more costly to produce a knit in this fashion, the trade off is unsurpassed quality and a unique product that is leaps and bounds above other similar knit garments. These items are intended to be worn for a lifetime or longer.
If you haven't yet had a chance, stop by our shop and see the Dehen collection for yourself. We think you too will begin to appreciate their products for what they really are - Heavy Duty, Old School Truth

Three colors, all fantastic and made right here in the USA. You know Tellason wouldn't have it any other way,.

Spring is nearly at our doorstep and the fine folks at Danner have five new additions to their Stumptown Collection, each and every pair flawlessly crafted right here in Portland, Oregon.
Whether trekking the trails of Forest Park or cruising the streets of your hometown, these boots are a great addition when exploring your own back yard.
All items purchased at The Woodlands by Monday, December 19th are guaranteed to arrive before Christmas, Sunday, December 25th.
Just a friendly reminder from your friends.
Plan accordingly,
- The Woodlands
It’s no secret we’re fans of the Pacific Northwest region we call home—Cascadia to be technically correct. To be fair, though, our friends who lock it down in the equally beautiful-and-burly Northeast know a thing or two about making products that perform, last, and look good doing it. Case in point: Massachusetts-based stalwarts Penfield. We’re fired up to be adding them to the Woodlands line-up of brands. Penfield has a long history of producing quality garments that make use of tested materials, in classic styles and fabrications that are equally at home in the woods or on the streets.

The Corning is Penfield’s riff on the classic work shirt, with subtle details like cat’s eye buttons, double and triple stitching and multi-functional chest pockets. Other standouts include the waxed cotton Dryden anorak, the 60/40 Kasson parka and the down-filled Ottowa jacket.

All Penfield
items represent a terrific value, and come from a company that’s less
interested in chasing trends than in making solid, functional gear that
will look good in your closet season after season. Give them a look, and
we think you’ll like what you see.

One of the nicest things about owning a shop is the sense of place it gives you. Being able to come into a space you’ve spent time designing, configuring and making your own is extremely satisfying. So, we’re happy to announce that after a great run having Woodlands in Portland’s Old Town neighborhood, we’ve moved our shop to the Black Box building, and become neighbors with the other member in our family, Tanner Goods. By moving into the new space, we were able to create some really cool window and display options, share storage with Tanner Goods, take advantage of an amazing, well-trafficked retail area and benefit from the synergy of a new building filled with incredible neighbors. We’re super excited about our new space, and as always, we hope you’ll come stop by when you’re in the area. 413 SW 13th Ave. Porltand, Ore. 97209

Also on the list of things we’re excited about right now is a new denim shirt from Tellason. We love a well-made, classically styled shirt, and this one delivers on all counts. Made from Cone Mills White Oak 6.5oz raw denim, its gray-blue shade is really striking, and allows it to be worn with raw denim jeans without looking like you’re wearing a monochromatic suit of denim. Details on this fine item include painted metal buttons that have been “tossed in the hopper” to create a nice patina, a single mother-of-pearl snap on the cuff, the same brown and gold thread used on Tellason jeans, and buttonholes and button thread from the same indigo thread used on the Tellason back pocket “T.” And perhaps our favorite touch: A pencil slot on the right chest pocket, which comes with a Tellason yellow #2 for your scribbling needs. This item is only available in a few select retailers, and we’re stoked to be one of them. Get one while we’ve got your size!

We’ve also received new stock from Reigning Champ, incredible new sweaters from Dehen 1920, a restock of Two Feet Ahead socks, and an unheard of restock of the Yuketen Main Guide Boot in brown Chromexcel leather. Many of these items move quickly, so don’t sleep. See you in The Woodlands.
